Helicopter lifeline launches for Russia's remote villages amid spring floods
Helicopter services have begun in the Ust-Tsilma District to help residents cope with the spring mud season. With roads and rivers often impassable during this time, flights provide a vital transport link for the remote area in Russia's Komi Republic. The first routes started operating on March 31, with more scheduled from April 2. The initial flights follow a route connecting Ust-Tsilma with Okunev Nos, Medvezhka, Novy Bor, Yermitsa, Kharya, Sredneye Bugayevo, and Ueg. This service runs as weather permits, using a Mi-8 helicopter to navigate the challenging conditions.
From April 2, additional flights will serve the Ust-Tsilma – Neritsa – Chernogorskaya – Zamezhnaya – Trusovo – Sinegorye – Ust-Tsilma route. These will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays, offering more options for residents in isolated villages. The district, home to around 13,000 people, relies heavily on air transport during *rasputitsa*—the spring flood period when thawing ground and rising waters cut off ground travel. Without these flights, many communities would face severe disruptions to daily life.
The expanded helicopter services aim to maintain essential connections across the district. Residents will depend on these flights until roads and rivers become passable again. All operations remain weather-dependent, with schedules adjusted as needed.
