High Rhine Railway Shuts Down for Major Upgrades in March 2026

The High Rhine Railway between Basel and Waldshut-Tiengen will face a full closure from March 23 to March 29, 2026. No trains will run during this period as major construction work takes place on tracks, signalling, and safety systems.

The shutdown will begin with the section between Grenzach and Waldshut, then extend from Basel starting March 26. Affected services include the RE 3 and RB 30 lines, with rail replacement buses operating in their place.

Maintenance will also cover the stretch between Albbruck and Waldshut. The work serves as preparation for a longer closure planned from late April, which will involve building new level crossings and adjusting infrastructure. By the end of 2027, the entire line is set to be electrified. For now, passengers are urged to plan ahead, allowing extra travel time and checking updated connections.

The week-long closure marks the first phase of upgrades along the High Rhine Railway. Replacement buses will help minimise disruption, but travellers should verify schedules through Deutsche Bahn, SBB, or local transport authorities. Further details on alternative transport will be available on official platforms.
