High-speed cycle route between Braunschweig and Salzgitter nears approval
Plans for a high-speed cycle route linking Braunschweig to Salzgitter and Wolfenbüttel are progressing. The project aims to cut travel times for cyclists and e-bike riders, making journeys as fast as driving. A planning office has been reviewing possible routes since last autumn. The cities of Braunschweig, Salzgitter, and Wolfenbüttel are working together on the scheme, alongside the Greater Braunschweig Regional Association. Their focus is on areas between Europaplatz and the A 39 motorway, as well as certain districts. The routes are designed to avoid delays from traffic intersections, narrow paths, poor surfaces, and steep slopes.
Over 300 suggestions were collected from residents during the first public consultation in spring 2025. Initial route options have now been shortlisted for a second round of feedback. A workshop for local people will take place on Tuesday, June 23, at 6:00 PM at the Raabeschule Gymnasium (Stöckheim branch) to help select a preferred route.
The chosen route will then be presented to political committees for further discussion and approval. High-speed cycle routes are seen as vital for improving transport and reducing emissions. The workshop aims to finalise a route that meets the needs of cyclists and local communities. Once approved, the route will move closer to implementation. Further details are available on the Greater Braunschweig Regional Association’s website.
