HCM City metro line 1 operator turns profit in first full year

Ho Chi Minh City's metro breaks records with 20M riders in 2025

Ho Chi Minh City’s first metro line has seen rapid growth since launching in late 2024. The 20 km route, linking the city centre to eastern districts, carried over 20.5 million passengers in 2025 alone. Now, plans are underway to extend the line further, aiming to boost regional travel and reduce road congestion. The metro began commercial operations in December 2024. By 2025, it had completed over 80,000 trips and generated VNĐ547 billion (US$21.5 million) in revenue—a 50-fold increase from the previous year. The operator also reported an after-tax profit of nearly VNĐ39 billion (US$1.5 million).

From January 1 to May 19, 2026, the line served over 8.86 million passengers, averaging nearly 64,000 daily riders. Fares currently range from VNĐ6,000 to VNĐ20,000 per trip, with monthly passes priced at VNĐ40,000, VNĐ90,000, and VNĐ300,000—students receive a 50% discount. In late April 2026, Đồng Nai authorities proposed extending the metro by 41 km to Long Thành International Airport. The expansion aims to improve connectivity, ease road traffic, and support urban development around transit hubs.

The metro’s success has led to higher profits and growing passenger numbers. With the proposed extension, the system could further reduce reliance on roads and strengthen transport links. Authorities are now reviewing the plan for the 41 km route to Long Thành Airport.
