A street with moving cars, a speed limit sign, electric poles with wires, buildings with windows and railings, trees, and a clear blue sky.

Holt, Herrath, and Bonnenbroich introduce new 30 km/h zones for safer streets

In addition to a few new 30 km/h zones—such as around Hehner Straße and Weidenstraße in Holt—most of the measures either expand existing zones or connect them. The scale of these extensions varies significantly. In Herrath, for example, a roughly one-kilometer 30 km/h zone is being created along Seidenweberstraße and its side streets, while in Bonnenbroich, only about 150 meters of Bonnenbroicher Straße will be added to the existing speed-restricted area.

The individual measures stem from traffic planning objectives, noise action plans, or specific review mandates issued by local politicians to the city administration. They are implemented where legal and traffic conditions are met—primarily on streets with predominantly residential character and low through traffic.

Not every street under review qualifies for a 30 km/h zone: Reyerhütter Straße, for instance, will remain exempt due to its role in the traffic network, heavy destination-bound traffic, and existing traffic light systems.

The new 30 km/h zones align with the existing priority road network and do not affect major traffic arteries, meaning the impact on both public transport and overall traffic flow is expected to be minimal. While five bus routes pass through these areas, the NEW transport company estimates that average travel times will increase by only a few seconds—an insignificant delay.

These zones are specifically designated for side streets and differ from isolated 30 km/h sections, which can also be introduced on larger roads. The approved measures, broken down by district, are as follows:

North District Hehner Straße, Weidenstraße, Karmannstraße, Franz-Brandts-Allee, Karmannshof, Immelmannstraße, Fringsstraße, Dreimüllerhof, Aktienstraße, Dahler Kirchweg, Eickener Höhe, Schwogenstraße, Flenkenweg, Bergstraße, Josefstraße, Sachsenstraße

South District Morr, Bonnenbroicher Straße, Dohrer Straße, Eisenbahnstraße, Vierhausstraße, Endepohlstraße, Hugo-Junkers-Straße, Kreuzstraße, Klosterhofweg, Marie-Juchacz-Straße, Schäferstraße, Hangbuschweg, Schroffstraße, Bankstraße, Straßburger Allee

East District Peter-Schumacher-Platz, Leppershütte, Hülserkamp, Stichweg Neusser Straße, Volksgartenstraße

West District Trompeterallee, Hocksteiner Kirchweg, Voosen, Seidenweberstraße, Emil-Esser-Platz, Buchholzer Weg, Venrather Weg

These initiatives build on existing plans: In 2021, the city approved 36 new 30 km/h zones, nearly all of which have since been implemented. The latest measures will gradually expand this network. The total cost of implementation is approximately €142,000, primarily covering road markings and signage, with work scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
