How AI Is Quietly Redefining the Way We Shop Online

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how people shop online, with nearly nine in ten users saying it simplifies their buying decisions. Yet only a small fraction would trust AI to make purchases entirely on their behalf. The shift highlights how technology now acts more as a shopping assistant than a replacement for human choice.

Search habits are changing too, as consumers turn to longer, more detailed queries to find exactly what they need. Google now handles over 5 billion searches each year, with many queries growing up to three times longer than before. Instead of vague terms like 'five-star hotel', users now search for specifics, such as 'family-friendly hotels in Mérida that allow pets'. This trend reflects a broader move toward intent-driven, detailed requests.

AI-powered tools like Gemini are helping interpret these complex needs. By analysing context, preferences, and past behaviour, they deliver more relevant results. Nearly half of shoppers now rely on AI to compare prices or technical features, saving an average of 2.8 hours per week.

The way people search is also diversifying. Text remains common, but voice, images, and video are playing a bigger role. Brands must adapt by offering clear, well-structured information if they want to appear in AI-driven results.

Experts suggest companies should focus on providing useful, reliable content that matches user intent. Those that fail to adjust risk being overlooked in an increasingly AI-assisted marketplace. The rise of AI in shopping means brands must rethink how they connect with customers. Longer, more precise searches and multimodal interactions are becoming the norm. Businesses that prioritise structured, helpful information will have a better chance of being found—and chosen—by today’s AI-guided shoppers.
