A large stone structure, believed to be the ruins of the Chittagong Fort, stands in a grassy field surrounded by trees, buildings, and a river, with a sky visible at the top and a watermark on the right side.

India’s largest funicular train now connects Haji Malang Fort in minutes

A new train service has opened at Haji Malang Fort in Thane’s Kalyan, making the historic site far easier to reach. The service replaces a steep climb of over 2,500 steps, cutting travel time from hours to minutes. Operated by the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), it is now the largest funicular train in India.

The train stretches 1.2 kilometres, ascending between 300 and 400 metres up the hillside. Each train can carry up to 90 passengers, with a round-trip ticket priced at Rs 150. The KRCL, which also built the system, aims to improve access for tourists and pilgrims alike.

Haji Malang Fort sits about 20 kilometres from Kalyan railway junction. Visitors can reach the base by bus, auto-rickshaw, or private vehicle. The best time to visit remains between October and February, when weather conditions are most favourable. Before the train, reaching the fort required a 2 to 3-hour trek up rough, rock-cut steps. The new service now offers a quick and comfortable alternative for those exploring the site.

The funicular train provides a faster, more convenient route to Haji Malang Fort. Its launch reduces physical strain for visitors while boosting tourism in the region. The KRCL’s project marks a significant upgrade in accessibility for the historic location.
