Ixtapaluca Trolleybus breaks ground to expand electric transit in Mexico Valley

Construction has started on the Ixtapaluca Trolleybus, a major expansion of the Santa Marta–Chalco electric transport line. The project, costing 1.721 billion pesos (around $100 million USD), will extend high-capacity trolleybus services to Ixtapaluca, Valle de Chalco, Chalco, and Los Reyes La Paz. The 10-kilometre route in each direction will include 12 new stations. Officials aim to finish the work by July 17, 2027. Juan Hugo de la Rosa García, the State of Mexico’s mobility secretary, outlined the plans, which also feature an elevated viaduct and improved bus bays at Constitución de 1917 Station.

The scheme is led by the Integrated Public Train and Transport Agency (Attrapi) under the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT). Early estimates suggest 53,000 daily passengers at launch, with numbers expected to climb to 62,000. The goal is to shorten journey times, reduce street crime, and enhance safety for commuters in the southeastern Mexico Valley.

Once completed, the Ixtapaluca Trolleybus will connect more communities to the existing network. The 1.721-billion-peso investment seeks to improve transport efficiency and security for tens of thousands of daily riders. Authorities have set a mid-2027 deadline for full operation.
