Kazakhstan and China Railway Chiefs Plan Major Freight and Infrastructure Expansion by 2026
Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) and China Railway have held their third high-level meeting in recent months. Talgat Aldabergenov, KTZ Chairman, met with Guo Zhuxue, Chairman of China Railway's Board, to strengthen rail cooperation between the two nations. The talks focused on expanding freight services and deepening infrastructure partnerships by 2026. Both sides reviewed the steady rise in freight volumes for 2025, with the Chinese delegation noting strong growth. Plans were set to increase rail traffic through cross-border checkpoints, targeting higher transportation volumes in the coming year.
The discussions covered the launch of 25 new container trains by 2026 along key routes, including TMTM, China-Europe, China-Central Asia, and China-Russia. They also agreed to expand digital systems and improve information sharing for better transport planning. Infrastructure upgrades formed a major part of the talks. Projects like second track construction, terminal expansions, and modernising rail segments were outlined. A third cross-border railway crossing at Bakhty-Tacheng was also considered, with forecasts on cargo types and volumes. Beyond freight, the two companies explored launching a tourist train from China to Kazakh and Central Asian cities. This initiative aims to boost cultural exchanges alongside economic ties.
The meeting marked another step in the close collaboration between Kazakhstan's and China's railway authorities. By 2026, the partnership will introduce more container trains, upgrade infrastructure, and enhance transit efficiency. The plans also include new cross-border services and cultural connectivity through tourism.
