Kazakhstan races to shield highways from spring flood threats

Authorities in Kazakhstan's Akmola Region have stepped up efforts to protect major highways from spring flooding. The focus lies on two critical routes: the Astana–Korgalzhyn and Kokshetau–Atbasar corridors. Road maintenance teams are working to prevent water damage and ensure safe travel conditions. KazAvtoZhol, the national road agency, has launched surveys of flood-risk zones along the key routes. Crews have cleared drainage systems and removed debris from culverts to improve water flow. Over 100 drainage pipes on local roads have been repaired or replaced to reduce vulnerable areas.

On the Astana–Korgalzhyn highway, protective embankments have been reinforced. Along the Kokshetau–Atbasar route, teams are monitoring water levels and inspecting dams and drainage networks. Additional reinforcements remain on standby in case of rising flood threats. The agency has also prioritised 32 high-risk sections of essential roads. Water management systems have undergone repairs to prevent road inundation and maintain traffic safety during the spring thaw.

The measures aim to safeguard critical transport links in the Akmola Region. With drainage infrastructure upgraded and embankments strengthened, authorities seek to minimise disruptions from seasonal flooding. Continuous monitoring will help address any emerging risks along the highways.
