Kazakhstan's Operation Bekire-2026 nets tons of illegal sturgeon and caviar

Authorities in Atyrau Region have cracked down on illegal fishing and fish trafficking as part of Operation Bekire-2026. The campaign has led to the seizure of over four tons of illegally traded fish, including sturgeon and caviar. Officials are now investigating multiple criminal cases linked to the violations.

The operation targeted poaching and the illegal trade of fish products across the region. During the crackdown, officers uncovered 152 violations related to fishing, storage, transportation, and sales. Among the confiscated items were 911 kilograms of sturgeon and one kilogram of sturgeon caviar.

Investigators also seized 19 illegal fishing tools and 10 watercraft used for unlawful activities. All confiscated fish products have since been handed over to the Ural-Atyrau Sturgeon Fish Farm. Seven criminal cases are currently under pretrial investigation following the findings. Alongside enforcement, authorities are conducting outreach with local residents and fisheries representatives. The aim is to raise awareness about environmental protection and the importance of reporting illegal fishing to law enforcement.

The operation has disrupted illegal fishing networks in Atyrau Region. Confiscated equipment and fish products have been redistributed, while ongoing investigations target those responsible. Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help safeguard local wildlife.
