Khabarovsk rolls out AI traffic lights to slash congestion and boost safety
Khabarovsk has started installing AI-powered traffic lights to modernise its road network. The project is part of the federal Infrastructure for Life initiative and aims to improve traffic flow, cut congestion, and boost safety for drivers and pedestrians. In 2023, the city plans to launch nine of these smart traffic lights. Each unit will use artificial intelligence to analyse vehicle and pedestrian movements, adjusting signal timings to optimise traffic. Fine-tuning for each light is expected to take about a month.
The 2023 phase has a budget of 47.4 million rubles. Over the next five years, a total of 150 million rubles will fund the expansion of the system. By 2027, AI will manage traffic at 30 intersections, assisting with the city’s roughly 300 traffic lights. The new system will cover key junctions across Khabarovsk. It is designed to make travel smoother and safer for residents. The full rollout will complete by the end of the 2027 phase.
