Khabarovsk's Tram Tracks Get a High-Tech Overhaul for Smoother Rides
Khabarovsk is upgrading its tram tracks on Sheronova Street using modern techniques. The project includes a reversible tram system—a first for the city—to keep services running during repairs. Work will stretch from Volochayevskaya to Lenin streets, with the first section set to reopen by June. The last major overhaul of this route took place in the mid-1990s. Now, crews are fully replacing the old subgrade and base with reinforced materials. Wooden sleepers will be swapped for reinforced concrete ones, extending the track’s lifespan and improving load resistance.
The upgrade uses the 'velvet track' method, which reduces wear on tram wheels and rails. This approach also minimises rail joints and ensures thorough quality checks. By late August, the entire segment should be complete. Once finished, specialists will reinstall the switch points and move to the adjacent track. The reversible tram system, introduced temporarily, maintains service on busy routes while repairs continue.
The project marks the first use of a reversible tram system in Khabarovsk. Modern materials and methods aim to create a smoother, longer-lasting track. Full completion is expected by the end of summer, with ongoing work shifting to nearby sections afterward.
