KLIA Aerotrain to resume 24-hour service by May 2023 after upgrades

The KLIA Terminal 1 Aerotrain service is set to return to full 24-hour operations by the end of May 2023. Since its restart on July 1, 2022, the system has carried nearly seven million passengers. However, it has also faced multiple disruptions due to technical and human-related issues. Between July 2 and September 30, 2022, the aerotrain recorded 19 incidents. Some of these were caused by passengers forcing doors open, while others stemmed from technical faults. Despite these challenges, the system maintained an operational service availability (OSA) of 98.41 per cent during this period.

Since November 14, 2022, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has been implementing a comprehensive action plan (CAP) to improve reliability. The aerotrain has since completed over 53,000 return trips, demonstrating steady performance. MAHB has also conducted all required tests and submitted a full report to the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for review. Currently, the aerotrain operates with brief nightly pauses for maintenance and inspections. This temporary measure ensures ongoing safety checks before full 24-hour service resumes.

The aerotrain’s return to round-the-clock operations will restore full convenience for KLIA passengers. With improved reliability measures in place, the system aims to maintain high service standards. MAHB continues to monitor performance closely as it prepares for the May 2023 transition.
