Knies Kinderzoo's new electric tram ends 60 years of horse-drawn rides

Knies Kinderzoo in Rapperswil has replaced its iconic horse-drawn tram after 60 years of service. A brand-new electric tram, designed and built entirely by apprentices, made its first test run today. The modern vehicle will begin carrying visitors from January 31, 2026.

The project began roughly two years ago as a collaboration between 35 apprentices from Stadler Rail and the Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB). The young team handled every stage, from planning to construction, creating a fully functional e-tram for the zoo.

The new tram is not only eco-friendly but also wheelchair-accessible, improving access for all guests. Its debut marks the end of an era for the three horses that once pulled the carriage—they will now retire after decades of service.

Following today's successful test, the e-tram will officially enter daily operation on January 31, offering a quieter, smoother ride through the zoo.

The electric tram replaces a long-standing tradition at Knies Kinderzoo. Visitors will now experience a modern, sustainable way to tour the park. Meanwhile, the retired horses will enjoy a well-earned rest after years of service.
