Komi launches major road repairs to upgrade regional transport by 2026
Major road repairs will begin in the Republic of Komi on May 1, 2026. The upgrades form part of a wider push to improve transport links across the region. Officials have urged drivers to expect temporary delays and follow posted signs during construction. The project will focus on replacing the top layer of asphalt concrete along key routes. New drainage channels will replace old pipes, while fresh curb stones and restored sidewalks will also be installed. To manage traffic flow, reversible lanes and temporary lights will be used where needed.
Work is set to finish by July 31, 2026. The improvements aim to create smoother, safer journeys for motorists and passengers alike. This scheme falls under Russia's national *Infrastructure for Life* initiative, launched by President Vladimir Putin. The repairs are part of a broader 2026 plan covering 93 km of roads, 723 m of bridges, 14 km of sidewalks, and 7 km of lighting. Regional leader Rostislav Goldstein has pledged to make Komi's roads the best in the Northwest Federal District by 2030. Over 90% of contracts are already signed, with key routes like Syktyvkar–Ukhta–Pechora–Usinsk progressing ahead of schedule.
Drivers should prepare for short-term disruptions, including lane changes and speed restrictions. The completed upgrades will improve road quality and travel conditions across the region. Authorities have stressed that patience and adherence to temporary rules will help ensure the work is finished on time.
