Kuwait's elite customs unit cracks down on smugglers with dogs and high-tech tactics
Kuwait’s General Administration of Customs has strengthened its fight against smuggling through the Tracking Division, a specialised unit set up in 2006. The division plays a key role in national security by detecting drugs, explosives, and illegal goods across land, sea, and air ports. In 2025 alone, it uncovered 10 major smuggling cases, proving its effectiveness in combating organised crime. The Tracking Division operates under the Customs Investigation and Research Office, with seven centres spread across Kuwait. Its team includes around 140 customs inspectors who oversee operations and manage logistical support. The unit also relies on 157 police dogs of different breeds, such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labradors, and Cocker Spaniels, all trained to sniff out prohibited materials.
Smugglers have grown more creative in hiding narcotics, often mixing them with everyday items like pepper, flour, or onions. They also conceal drugs inside various objects to avoid detection. Despite these challenges, the division’s dogs and inspectors systematically check cargo, vehicles, and passengers to intercept illegal shipments. The work is physically demanding, with long hours and risks like dog bites. However, the customs administration ensures the animals receive top-level care through a fully equipped veterinary clinic. This support helps maintain the division’s high operational standards.
The Tracking Division remains a cornerstone of Kuwait’s security efforts. Its combination of skilled inspectors, trained dogs, and advanced techniques has led to significant busts in recent years. The unit’s continued success highlights its importance in safeguarding the country from illegal trafficking.
