Lagos shuts Eko Bridge for urgent repairs after repeated fires

The Lagos State Government will close the outbound section of Eko Bridge from Tuesday for urgent repairs. The decision follows repeated fire incidents beneath the structure, which have caused significant damage. Authorities have stressed the need for safety checks and immediate rehabilitation work. Eko Bridge is a vital route linking Lagos Mainland to Lagos Island. Over time, it has faced structural issues due to multiple fire outbreaks, often tied to illegal activities under the bridge. The latest assessment will determine how severe the damage is.

Buildwell Construction Company, along with professional divers, will carry out the inspections. Their report must be ready within 10 days to allow repairs to start quickly. While work is underway, motorists heading from Apongbon towards Ijora Olopa and other Island routes will need to take detours. The government has advised drivers to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative. Traffic officers and security teams will also be stationed around the area to manage congestion and assist commuters.

The closure aims to ensure public safety while repairs are completed. Once the 10-day assessment is finished, rehabilitation work will begin without delay. Motorists are urged to follow official guidance and plan their journeys accordingly.
