London St Pancras gets £100m upgrade to slash Eurostar wait times

The New York Times reports that London St Pancras station is undergoing a £100 million overhaul to address congestion and expedite passenger processing. This comes as Eurostar expands its capacity and new EU border rules take effect. Under the plans, queueing times could be reduced by up to 30 minutes.

The station's remodelling will focus on expanding queuing areas and creating more space for travellers. Five international platforms will be shared by all services, with passengers directed to the correct train after security checks. Once cleared, they will be able to wait directly on the platforms.

Check-in times will also be halved, from 60 minutes to just 30 before boarding. The upgrades aim to accommodate rising passenger numbers and support potential new rail operators using the Channel Tunnel. However, no dedicated platforms for additional companies have been confirmed yet, though future expansion remains under consideration.

These changes apply only to London St Pancras, with no similar adjustments planned for Paris Gare du Nord or other continental stations.

The project seeks to enhance efficiency at one of Europe's busiest rail hubs. Faster processing and reduced wait times will help manage growing demand from Eurostar and future services. The station's modernisation aligns with stricter EU border controls and increased cross-Channel travel.
