A bear cub was seen alone near a roadside close to the village of Alek-Zavod in Transbaikalia on June 5. Concerned locals had begun feeding the animal, unaware of the risks involved. Authorities later confirmed the cub was not abandoned but had simply lagged behind its mother. The cub was first spotted eating from a plastic bag by the road. Passengers in a nearby vehicle assumed it had been left behind, as the mother bear had already moved into the forest unseen. The young animal soon followed, retreating into the woods after a short delay.
The Transbaikalia Ministry of Natural Resources stepped in to investigate. They worked with local officials and eyewitnesses to piece together what had happened. It turned out the cub had crossed the road with its mother, who had gone ahead out of sight. Alexander Buzinov, head of the Protected Areas Directorate in Transbaikalia, noted that such sightings are common this time of year. As the mating season approaches, adolescent cubs often wander briefly without their mothers. However, feeding them can lead to dangerous behaviour, such as approaching human settlements or being attacked by dogs. Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources later issued a reminder to residents. They warned against photographing, chasing, or feeding wild animals, stressing the potential harm to both people and wildlife.
The incident ended well, with the cub safely reuniting with its mother. Authorities have reiterated the importance of leaving wild animals undisturbed. Feeding or approaching them can create long-term risks for the animals and local communities.
