Lucerne Station secures 3.8M franc upgrade to ease transport chaos
Lucerne Station is set for major upgrades after the Cantonal Council approved a 3.8 million Swiss franc investment. The project will introduce new bus platforms to reduce overcrowding and improve transport links across the city. Work is expected to begin soon, with changes taking effect by 2026.
The approved funds will pay for a double-sided boarding area along Pilatusstrasse and a reorganisation of platforms near the Torbogen archway. These adjustments aim to streamline passenger flow and create smoother connections between Lucerne's outer districts.
The federal government has pledged to cover 40 percent of the costs for both the platforms and necessary power line changes. However, the 3.8 million francs allocated by the council does not include the 1.5 million francs needed for overhead line modifications. This additional expense will be handled by VBL AG, the local transport operator.
Once completed, the new platforms will help ease congestion at one of Lucerne's busiest transport hubs. The upgrades are scheduled to be operational by 2026, with funding shared between the canton and federal holidays 2025 authorities. VBL AG will separately manage the costs for adapting the power lines.
