Macau Unveils Ambitious Plan to Expand Its Light Rail Network by 2029
Macau is planning its first major expansion of the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system since its launch in 2019. A public consultation on the city's rail development strategy opened recently, with proposals including three new lines. Officials hope the changes will ease congestion and improve transport links for tourists and residents alike.
The current LRT network operates three lines: the Taipa Line, Seac Pai Van Line, and Hengqin Line. In 2025, daily ridership averaged 26,400 passengers, peaking at 32,600 in November. That same year, Macau saw a record 40 million visitors—a 15% rise from 2024—putting extra pressure on public transport.
Plans now include a West Line, a South Line, and an extension to the East Line. The East Line, already under construction, will connect Qingmao Port to Taipa Ferry Terminal when it opens in 2029. The proposed South Line would serve major casinos such as Wynn, MGM, StarWorld, and Sands Macau.
The government aims to fill gaps in rail coverage at key entry points. By expanding the network, authorities also hope to reduce reliance on public buses and casino resort shuttles.
The 30-day public consultation on the 'Macau Light Rail Development Strategy Study' will gather feedback on the proposals. If approved, the new lines would mark the system's first expansion in seven years. The changes are designed to meet growing demand as visitor numbers continue to climb.
