Maharashtra Approves ₹22,611 Crore Infrastructure Projects For Mumbai Region

Maharashtra approves ₹22,611 crore transport overhaul for Mumbai's future

The Maharashtra government has greenlit major transport upgrades worth ₹22,611 crore for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Two key projects—a 5.86-km underground tunnel and a 9.58-km elevated corridor—will transform connectivity along Ghodbunder Road and Vasai Creek. Both initiatives aim to slash travel times and reduce congestion in the bustling area. The first project involves a six-lane underground tunnel stretching 5.86 km between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel. Built using a 14-metre Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), it is set for completion within five years. The tunnel will form part of a larger ₹17,036 crore scheme, which also includes an elevated corridor.

That elevated route, spanning 9.58 km, will link Fountain Hotel to Bhayandar, running parallel to Vasai Creek. Designed for speeds up to 100 kmph, it will ease pressure on Ghodbunder Road. Both projects will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with funding support from the central and state governments.

Beyond these roads, the Cabinet also approved expansions for Navi Mumbai’s metro network. Metro Lines 1A and 2 will add 13 new stations, extending services from Sagar Sangam to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal-4. This ₹5,575 crore metro upgrade will create a seamless 28-km corridor, improving access to the airport and surrounding areas. The combined ₹22,611 crore investment will reshape transport across the MMR. Faster road links and an extended metro network are expected to cut travel delays and boost connectivity. Construction will proceed under PPP agreements, with completion timelines spanning the next five years.
