Maharashtra cracks down on illegal cattle transport ahead of Bakri Eid
The Maharashtra government has launched a strict statewide crackdown on illegal cattle transportation, unauthorised slaughterhouses, and animal cruelty. Running from May 25 to May 28, 2026, the enforcement drive comes ahead of Bakri Eid, a period when cattle smuggling incidents often rise. Officials have warned that offenders will face immediate legal action and vehicle seizures. The special inspection drive was announced by State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who stressed the government’s commitment to preventing cow smuggling and illegal slaughter. The operation involves the Transport Department, local police, traffic authorities, the Animal Husbandry Department, and cow protection groups. Checkpoints will be set up in border areas, Mumbai, and other key routes to inspect vehicles transporting animals.
All vehicles carrying cattle will be checked for valid permits, health certificates, and compliance with animal welfare laws. The state has also directed RTOs and transport officials to ensure strict monitoring during the four-day period. Authorities will submit a detailed report on the actions taken under the drive. The crackdown follows the state’s decision to grant the indigenous cow the title of *Rajyamata* (mother of the state), a move pushed by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This status reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cow protection measures.
The enforcement drive aims to curb inhumane transportation and illegal trade of cattle, particularly during festivals when such activities tend to spike. Vehicles found violating regulations will be seized, and offenders will face legal consequences under existing laws. The government has made it clear that strict monitoring will continue beyond the four-day operation.
