Maharashtra revamps Gateway of India jetties to cut crowding and boost tourism

The Maharashtra government is upgrading jetty facilities at the Gateway of India to ease crowding and improve safety. A new modern jetty system is in the works, with plans to reorganise how existing jetties are used. Officials have also raised concerns over the current tariff structure at Jetty No. 5, prompting a review after public complaints.

Jetty No. 5, installed in November 2025, currently serves as the main access point for private yachts and speedboats. To reduce congestion at other jetties, the government now proposes reserving it primarily for larger and private vessels. The state has formally requested a revision of the revenue-sharing model, following a letter sent on February 16, 2026.

The wider plan includes developing a modern jetty system to strengthen Mumbai's position as a tourism and maritime hub. While Jetties 1 to 4 remain under Mumbai Port Trust for general passenger use, the focus is on improving management, safety, and infrastructure. Alongside this, the government is pushing fishermen and boat operators to switch from traditional wooden boats to modern or electric vessels. New marinas and amenities are also being planned to attract more visitors. The goal is to bring Mumbai's jetty operations in line with international standards while addressing long-standing issues around permissions and tariffs.

The upgrades aim to streamline operations, reduce overcrowding, and enhance safety at the Gateway of India. A revised tariff structure for Jetty No. 5 is under review, and the shift to modern boats is expected to improve efficiency. These changes form part of a broader push to develop Mumbai as a leading tourism and maritime destination.
