Maharashtra Plans EV Charging Stations Under Flyovers For MSRTC's 'Lal Pari' Electric Bus Fleet Expansion

Maharashtra to Turn Flyover Spaces Into EV Charging Hubs by 2035

Maharashtra is pushing ahead with plans to turn most of its vehicles electric by 2047. A key part of this effort involves setting up more charging points for electric buses. The state government is now looking at unused spaces beneath flyovers to build these charging hubs quickly and efficiently. A recent high-level meeting focused on improving charging infrastructure for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). Officials proposed using vacant areas under flyovers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, many of which are managed by the MMRDA and MSRDC. These spaces could soon house modern charging stations, funded through government schemes, self-financing, or public-private partnerships (PPP).

The MSRTC itself plans to set up at least 200 charging stations across Maharashtra under the PPP model. This move supports its goal of converting the entire bus fleet to electric by 2035. Authorities, including the Public Works Department, have been instructed to survey available spaces under flyovers to identify suitable locations. Better charging facilities are expected to boost the efficiency of electric buses. This, in turn, should strengthen public transport services across the state, making them more reliable for daily commuters.

The push for electric mobility in Maharashtra includes converting unused flyover spaces into charging hubs. With 200 new stations planned and a 2035 target for a fully electric fleet, the MSRTC aims to improve public transport while supporting the state’s broader green goals. The plan relies on cooperation between government bodies and private partners to expand infrastructure efficiently.
