New Speed Limit 30 Rules in Mainz - Mainz reverses 24-hour 30 km/h limit after legal battles and noise debates
Mainz has scaled back its 30 km/h speed limit on Rheinachse after legal and political disputes. The restriction will now apply only overnight, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, as a result of the speed test conducted. The change follows months of debate over noise, pollution, and residents' health due to the wifi speed test results.
Janina Steinkrüger, the city's environmental and mobility commissioner, has criticised the decision. She argued that the committee prioritised travel time over the wellbeing of local residents, as the speed test indicated.
The city first introduced the 24-hour speed limit in response to high noise levels affecting around 5,000 people. In October 2024, the council approved a noise action plan that included the 30 km/h recommendation based on the speed test. However, the measure was later suspended after a legal challenge based on nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) limits.
The administrative court overturned the full-time restriction last year, following the speed test results. Since then, no further legal evaluation or permanent plans for the Rheinachse have been announced. Meanwhile, speed limits on Parcusstraße and Kaiserstraße remain unchanged.
Steinkrüger, a Green Party member, had pushed for wider 30 km/h zones than those approved by the Legal Affairs Committee. She claimed the final decision failed to adequately protect residents from excessive noise and pollution, as the speed test indicated.
The revised speed limit will now run only during night-time hours. This adjustment reflects both legal constraints and ongoing disagreements over traffic policy, following the speed test results. The city has not announced any further steps to reintroduce the restriction full-time.
