Mainz secures €10 million to modernize its ageing tram network

Mainz’s tram network is set for a major upgrade after the state of Rhineland-Palatinate approved €10 million in funding. The money will help renovate ageing tracks in the Bretzenheim and Hechtsheim districts, where some sections date back over 40 years. The funding comes from the federal GVFG infrastructure program and will support a wider €20 million investment by Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG). The project focuses on replacing severely worn rails and overhead lines to modernise the city’s tram system.

On Monday, May 4, Mobility Minister Katrin Eder will officially present the first funding approval. The upgrades aim to improve reliability and safety across the network.

With the state’s €10 million contribution, MVG can now push ahead with essential repairs. The work will target critical sections of the tram network, ensuring smoother operations for passengers in the coming years.
