Mainz unveils four smart mobility hubs to streamline urban travel

Four new "mobility hubs" have been set up at key locations across Mainz, according to joint announcements from the city administration and Mainz Mobility. These hubs now bring together various modes of transport—buses, trains, car-sharing services, the meinRad bike rental system, and e-scooters—all in one place.

The first stations are located in the city center: at the Roman Theater, Heugasse, Holzstraße, and Bonifaziusstraße. "Many people in Mainz already use different forms of transport as a matter of course, combining them depending on their route," explains Janina Steinkrüger, the city's mobility commissioner. The mobility hubs aim to build on and support this trend. "This will further strengthen and improve the reliability of the interplay between different transport options."

The designated spaces for shared mobility services will also help declutter sidewalks and reduce the distance between different transport options.

Blue Pillars as Landmarks

The mobility hubs are easily recognizable by their three-meter-tall, azure-blue pillars, which serve as landmarks. These pillars feature pictograms that provide an at-a-glance overview of the services available on-site. A QR code links to Mainz Mobility's journey planner, offering a map and direct navigation to each service.

"Traditional public transport and smart shared mobility options are now seamlessly connected," says Florian Wiesemann, managing director of Mainz Transport Company (MVG). The concept was developed by a joint working group from the city administration and Mainz Mobility.
