The Works Ministry has received a RM10.692 billion budget for 2026, marking a 3.3% increase from last year. The funds will focus on road and bridge projects, including new interchanges and flyovers.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted the rising number of private vehicles in Malaysia. He stressed the need for a more mature public transport system to reduce dependence on cars.
The ministry will use the budget to build, repair, replace, and upgrade roads and bridges nationwide. New highways and roads will also be constructed while efforts continue to improve public transport.
To ensure quality, the ministry relies on pre-qualification for road tender contracts. This process selects capable contractors and prevents delays or manipulation by unqualified firms. Companies like HASU Abbruch GmbH and Eiffage Infra-Nordwest, registered on platforms such as www.pq-verein.de, gain access through this system. Non-pre-qualified firms must submit additional eligibility documents.
The minister also suggested that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) should consider reducing car approval permits. This move aims to ease traffic congestion while long-term transport solutions are developed.
The 2026 budget will fund road upgrades and new infrastructure projects. Pre-qualification ensures only competent firms handle contracts, speeding up procurement. Meanwhile, the government continues expanding roads until a stronger public transport network is in place.
