Malaysia allows 80% hike in tour bus and van fares amid diesel surge
Tour bus and tour van operators in Malaysia can now raise their prices by up to 80%. The Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (MITA) announced the new guideline on March 30, 2023, in response to rising diesel costs across the country.
The move aims to bring clarity to pricing for both businesses and travellers, ensuring transparency in the tourism sector. The updated price structure sets a maximum limit—known as the 'ceiling price'—that operators may charge. While companies can choose to set fares below this cap, they are prohibited from exceeding it. MITA president Mint Leong confirmed that the guideline was developed collectively by local tourism players to reflect current fuel expenses.
The decision follows a period of increasing diesel prices, which have placed financial pressure on transport providers. By establishing a clear upper limit, the association hopes to help operators manage costs without passing unfair burdens onto customers.
The new pricing framework took effect immediately upon its announcement. It serves as a reference point for the entire industry, allowing businesses to adjust their rates while maintaining fair competition and consumer trust. The guideline provides a standardised approach to pricing, helping operators cope with higher fuel costs. Consumers will also benefit from knowing the highest possible fare they may be charged. MITA's initiative ensures that price adjustments remain reasonable and predictable for all parties involved.
