Malaysia's AI boom could add RM20 billion to GDP by 2030
Artificial intelligence could boost Malaysia’s economy by billions each year. By 2030, AI may add between RM13 billion and RM20 billion annually to the country’s GDP. Experts also predict it will raise yearly growth by up to 1.2 percentage points.
The 5th International Conference on Youth 2026 (ICYouth) has now turned its focus to AI, emphasising ethical and inclusive use to improve social wellbeing. The event highlights how young people will shape the technology’s future through values, data, and design choices. Malaysia’s digital economy, driven by AI, already plays a major role in national income. In 2022, it contributed over 23 per cent to GDP, totalling more than RM450 billion. The government now aims to build on this growth with new initiatives.
A key development is the upcoming launch of the Government Innovation Initiative (GII). This platform will provide real public sector challenges for tech-based solutions, including AI. GII ensures experimentation follows a structured approach, allowing responsible testing, refinement, and scaling of ideas.
The long-term effects of AI will depend on how it is developed and applied, particularly by younger generations. Their decisions—from the data they use to the models they train—will determine whether the technology benefits society broadly. ICYouth 2026 stresses that ethical frameworks must guide these advancements to prevent misuse and ensure fairness. AI’s economic potential in Malaysia is clear, with projections showing significant GDP gains by the end of the decade. The government’s new initiatives, like GII, will provide structured ways to develop and apply the technology.
How AI evolves will rest on the choices made today, especially by young innovators. Their approach to data, ethics, and system design will shape whether the benefits reach all parts of society.
