Economy Demands Relief Due to High Fuel Costs - Mecklenburg's businesses struggle as soaring fuel costs threaten competitiveness
Businesses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are facing growing financial pressure from rising fuel costs. The Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IHK) in Rostock and Schwerin have raised concerns about the impact on local companies, particularly in transport. Authorities are now pushing for measures to ease the burden on firms struggling with higher expenses.
The IHK highlighted that fuel prices in neighbouring Poland remain significantly lower than in Germany. This disparity has prompted calls for antitrust action to address potential market imbalances. The organisation also proposed suspending the recent increase in the CO₂ price and temporarily cutting the mineral oil tax on petrol and diesel.
Affordable energy costs are essential for maintaining competitiveness, according to the IHK. While the state benefits from higher tax and duty revenues due to elevated fuel prices, businesses are feeling the strain. Transport companies, in particular, are finding it harder to manage rising operational costs.
The IHK's warnings come as firms report sharply increased expenses, threatening their financial stability. Officials have yet to outline specific steps but stress the need for swift intervention to support struggling enterprises.
The IHK's proposals aim to reduce financial pressure on businesses by lowering fuel-related taxes. If implemented, these measures could help stabilise costs for transport and logistics firms. The state's response will determine whether companies receive the relief they need to remain competitive.
