More Public Transportation on Rails and Roads in MV - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania transforms travel with €120M transport overhaul

Public transport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has grown rapidly over the past three years. The state has poured hundreds of millions into improving rail and bus networks, with more upgrades on the way. New routes, increased frequencies, and expanded on-demand services aim to make travel easier across the region.

Between 2023 and 2025, the state invested around €120 million to boost transport links in the northeast. Rail services have already seen a nine percent rise in total kilometres operated since 2023. Two new regional express lines—the RE30 from Stralsund to Angermünde and the RE50 from Rostock to Neustrelitz—now provide faster connections.

Bus networks have also expanded. Sixteen new regional routes now cross district boundaries, while on-demand bus services will cover the entire state by the end of 2026. The RB12 line, linking Bad Doberan, Rostock, and Graal-Müritz, now runs more frequently to meet growing demand. An extra €60 million is set aside for next year's improvements. However, Transport Minister Wolfgang Blank criticised Deutsche Bahn's decision to axe an early-morning ICE route from Rostock via Schwerin to Hamburg. The move risks reducing long-distance news for commuters in the region.

The state's mobility push has already delivered more trains, buses, and flexible services. With further funding secured, additional upgrades will roll out over the next two years. The focus remains on strengthening connections within Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and beyond.
