Giant Container Ship Arrives in Hamburg - Mega-Ship OOCL Portugal Docks in Hamburg on Historic Maiden Voyage

One of the world’s largest container ships, the OOCL Portugal, arrived in Hamburg harbour on its maiden voyage. The vessel, built in 2024, measures 400 metres in length and spans 60 metres across. Its arrival required a brief pause in waterway traffic to ensure safe docking in the container store.

The OOCL Portugal docked in Hamburg as part of its first operational journey. To accommodate the massive ship, authorities halted through traffic on the waterway for roughly an hour. This precaution allowed the vessel to manoeuvre safely into position in the storage containers.

The container giant boasts a cargo capacity of nearly 225,000 tons and a draft of up to 16.5 metres. After completing its stop in Hamburg, the ship will proceed to Rotterdam before continuing to Antwerp. Details about the captain overseeing the voyage were not disclosed in available reports.

The OOCL Portugal’s visit highlights Hamburg’s role as a key port for large-scale shipping. Following its departure, the vessel will resume its route, with Antwerp as the next destination. The temporary traffic halt ensured smooth operations during its brief but significant stop in the container store.
