Mexico City Metro is set for major upgrades ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The government has announced a 2.4 billion peso investment to modernise the system, with 1.6 billion pesos dedicated to maintenance alone. The changes will bring significant improvements but may also cause short-term disruptions for passengers.
The renovation plan includes a full overhaul of Line 3, along with upgrades to 20 stations across the network. A total of 833 million pesos will fund escalator replacements, updated signage, and general modernisation to make stations more user-friendly. Mayor Clara Brugada has stressed that the work on Line 2 goes beyond surface changes, signalling deeper structural improvements.
The broader maintenance programme covers full-track upgrades, electrical system modernisation, and train enhancements. To improve transparency, authorities have launched a new digital platform where passengers can track how infrastructure funds are being spent. While the renovations may lead to temporary inconvenience, officials have assured commuters that the long-term benefits will be worth the adjustments.
The investment marks one of the largest upgrades in the Metro’s history. Once complete, passengers will experience faster, more reliable services and modernised stations. The changes are expected to be fully in place before the 2026 World Cup begins.
