Morelia's first cable car system launches September 30 with 46,000 daily passengers

Morelia is set to launch its first cable car system on September 30, 2023. The project, costing nearly 3 billion pesos, will initially serve four of its seven planned stations. Once operational, it will transport up to 46,000 passengers daily across the city. Construction of the cable car is currently 68% complete. The first phase will allow a 15-minute journey from north to south Morelia. Funding for the entire project comes from state resources, with no external debt involved.

The second phase of the system is expected to finish between December 2026 and January 2027. This follows Michoacán’s earlier cable car in Uruapan, which opened on April 18 at a cost of 3.2 billion pesos. Alongside the cable car, work on the Morebús transit system will start on May 12. The first phase of this project has an initial investment of 2.9 billion pesos.

The cable car will begin operations with four stations in September. Daily passenger capacity is set at 46,000, easing transport across Morelia. Further expansion and the Morebús system will follow in the coming years.
