Moscow's Biryulyovskaya metro line expands with new Luganskaya station upgrades
Moscow's Biryulyovskaya metro line is expanding with new infrastructure at Luganskaya station. The project includes turnback sidings over 300 meters long, designed to improve train operations. Construction work is already underway, with extensive earthworks and reinforced concrete structures taking shape.
The Luganskaya station site is seeing major changes. A foundation pit is being dug using the 'diaphragm wall' method, supported by steel struts and walers. The monolithic reinforced concrete wall will measure 1 metre thick and stretch 705 metres long. As soil is removed—around 221,000 cubic metres—a bracing system is being installed to keep the structure stable.
The turnback sidings, built via the open-cut method, will cover 7.7 hectares and extend 330 metres. Once complete, they will help manage train movements more efficiently. The surrounding area will also receive landscaping and improvements to blend with the urban environment.
Mosinzhproekt JSC, the general designer and contractor, has a strong track record in Moscow's metro development. Since 2011, the company has constructed or upgraded 84 stations and over 180 kilometres of track. It has also built eight new depots and modernised five existing ones, alongside a rolling stock repair plant.
The Biryulyovskaya line itself will connect key southern districts, running from the former ZIL industrial zone to Biryulyovo Zapadnoye and Biryulyovo Vostochnoye. When operational, it will serve residents in Danilovsky, Nagatinsky Zaton, Pechatniki, Tsaritsyno, and the Biryulyovo areas, improving transit links across the region.
The new turnback sidings and station upgrades will boost capacity on the Biryulyovskaya line. Residents in southern Moscow districts will gain faster and more reliable metro access once the project is finished.
