MSI has unveiled the RTX 5090 Lightning, a limited-edition graphics card developed with Nvidia. This high-end model promises extreme performance, with only 1,300 units available worldwide—each individually numbered.
The card made its debut at the CES 2026 Innovation Awards, where its standout features were showcased, including a built-in display and a power delivery system capable of reaching 1,600 watts under specific conditions.
The RTX 5090 Lightning arrives with a striking design, featuring an 8-inch display, carbon-fibre accents, and precision 'Lightning Cut' detailing. MSI has marketed its return with the slogan The Legend Returns, hinting at its status as a flagship product for extreme overclocking.
Performance-wise, the card surpasses the standard RTX 5090, already breaking 17 XOC world records at launch. In its default setup, it supports up to 800 watts, extendable to 1,000 watts via an 'Extreme BIOS'. However, the full 1,600-watt potential demands manual PCB tweaks or a custom BIOS—it is not available straight out of the box.
Cooling is handled by an all-in-one liquid cooler, with the cold plate covering the entire GPU surface. This ensures thermal efficiency even under heavy loads. While power requirements are extreme, MSI has not yet detailed the exact PCIe connectors or plug types needed for maximum delivery under standard conditions.
The RTX 5090 Lightning stands as MSI's most ambitious graphics card yet, blending cutting-edge cooling, record-breaking performance, and a premium build. With only 1,300 units in circulation, it targets elite enthusiasts willing to push hardware limits. Owners seeking the full 1,600-watt capability will need to modify the card beyond its default configuration.
