Mumbai Launches World's First Open Digital Mobility Network
Mumbai is set to become the first city in the world to launch an open, data-driven mobility platform. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has partnered with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to develop the Mumbai Transport Stack (MTS), a digital system designed to unify the city's transport network. Officials describe the project as a major step toward smarter, more connected urban travel.
The MTS platform will bring together metro systems, buses, suburban railways, and other transport services under a single digital infrastructure. By using open standard data exchange protocols and the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) framework, it aims to create a seamless network where different transport modes share information in real time.
For commuters, the system promises end-to-end ticket booking, live tracking of services, and integrated trip planning across multiple modes of transport. It will also provide real-time parking updates and open APIs for developers to build new mobility solutions.
MMRDA has allocated Rs 25 crore for the project in the 2026-27 budget. Technical support comes from JICA Dx Lab, ensuring the platform meets global standards. Unlike other cities, Mumbai's approach focuses on full interoperability—no other urban centre has yet implemented a similar open, data-driven transport network.
Officials believe MTS will enable better urban planning by analysing transport data flows. The goal is a unified, intelligent system that reduces congestion and improves efficiency across Mumbai's sprawling transport network.
The MTS project is scheduled to roll out with JICA's backing, positioning Mumbai as a pioneer in smart mobility. Commuters will gain access to real-time travel tools, while planners will use data to refine transport strategies. The initiative marks a shift toward a more coordinated, tech-driven future for the city's transport infrastructure.
