CM Devendra Fadnavis Envisions Dharavi Redevelopment On Lines Of Singapore, Hong Kong With Residents At Core

Mumbai's Dharavi redevelopment plan blends modern growth with heritage preservation

Mumbai’s Dharavi Redevelopment Project has taken a major step forward with a new blueprint aimed at transforming the area. The plan focuses on modern infrastructure, green spaces, and protecting the livelihoods of local residents. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that the project should follow models seen in Singapore and Hong Kong. The first phase of the project will deliver at least 10,000 homes to eligible residents by 2028. Alongside housing, a state-of-the-art multi-modal transport hub will be built, linking Western, Central, and Harbour railway lines with Metro corridors. Future plans also include connectivity to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train.

The redevelopment will introduce landscaped green zones and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure along the BKC-Dharavi corridor. A large nature park, tree transplantation, and sustainable urban planning measures are also part of the vision. Efforts will be made to preserve Dharavi’s traditional industries, such as leather, textiles, pottery, and food processing.

A dedicated MSME policy is being developed to support these industries and create jobs. Commercial growth in the area will prioritise public welfare, ensuring that residents, workers, and small businesses continue to thrive. The project aims to improve living standards while maintaining Dharavi’s unique social and industrial character. With modern transport links, green spaces, and safeguarded livelihoods, the redevelopment seeks to balance progress with preservation. Implementation will begin with housing and infrastructure upgrades in the coming years.
