Münchenstein rallies locals to fight invasive species along the Birs River

Münchenstein is hosting the 2026 Neophyte Action Days to protect native biodiversity along the Birs River. The initiative targets invasive plants and animals that threaten local ecosystems. Organisers are calling on residents, schools, and businesses to take part in the effort. The events will begin on Wednesday, May 20, running from 6 to 8 PM. A second session is planned for Thursday, July 30, during the same evening hours. Participants will work to remove harmful species like Asian knotweed, which can outcompete native plants.

The campaign is part of a broader push across Swiss cantons to control invasive species. In Zürich, authorities have funded annual removal projects along rivers since 2026. Schwyz district has enforced a similar plan since 2022, focusing on streams. Glarus Süd is also running a community-wide effort called Neophytenjagd 2026 in May and June. Aargau, meanwhile, has issued guidelines on when and how to tackle problem plants.

By involving the public, the initiative aims to restore balance to local habitats. Volunteers will receive guidance on identifying and safely removing invasive species. The action days provide hands-on opportunities for locals to support conservation. Removing invasive species helps native plants and wildlife thrive along the Birs. Organisers hope the effort will inspire long-term community involvement in protecting biodiversity.
