150 Years of Tram in Munich - Parade and Nostalgia Train - Munich's iconic tram system turns 150 with a rolling history lesson

Munich is marking a significant milestone as its tram system celebrates its 150th anniversary. The city has launched a special anniversary tram, with each carriage showcasing a different era of local transport history. Celebrations will include a parade of restored historic trams in October, alongside ongoing network expansions.

The first anniversary tram will begin regular service on Wednesday, running mainly on lines 16, 17, 19, 21, and 27. Two of the newest trams have also been styled in a commemorative design to honour the anniversary. Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) has organised an extensive programme of events to celebrate the anniversary.

Munich's tram network is currently expanding at its fastest rate in decades. The system, described by Dominik Krause, the city's second mayor, as 'a piece of Munich's way of life,' continues to play a key role in urban transport.

While the exact number of restored historic trams for the October parade remains unconfirmed, several vintage models will take part. The event will highlight the city's long-standing connection to its tram heritage.

The anniversary tram and expanded network reflect Munich's commitment to modernising while preserving its transport history. The celebrations will run throughout the year, with the October parade serving as a key highlight. Residents and visitors alike will have the chance to experience both historic and modern trams in operation.
