Mystery Whale Bets $80M on Bitcoin, Oil, and S&P 500 Amid Market Chaos
A large trader, known as a 'whale,' has opened an $80 million leveraged position across Bitcoin futures, S&P 500 contracts, and Brent crude oil. The move comes amid heightened market volatility, with geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz pushing oil prices above $105 per barrel.
The whale's latest trades were executed on the decentralised exchange Hyperliquid between Tuesday and Wednesday. The trader placed a $40 million short on Bitcoin near $68,760, using 7x leverage. Bitcoin had briefly dipped to $66,000 earlier in the week before recovering above $68,000. If the price rises to $80,083, the Bitcoin position will face liquidation.
Alongside the Bitcoin bet, the whale took a $2 million short on synthetic S&P 500 Index contracts and a $37 million long position on synthetic Brent crude oil. The oil trade's liquidation threshold sits above $93 per barrel. The combined leverage across all positions reached 7x, amplifying both potential gains and risks.
This isn't the first time the whale has made bold, high-stakes moves. In December 2025, during its first month of trading, the same wallet lost $37 million. More recently, it reversed profitable crypto short positions, resulting in a $40 million loss.
The latest trades coincide with escalating geopolitical unrest. In March 2026, US President Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz or threatening strikes on Iranian power plants. Earlier that month, Iran's Revolutionary Guards attacked the oil tanker Athe Nova with drones. The strait remains effectively blocked due to ongoing ship attacks, US airstrikes on Iranian targets, and Tehran's threats. Oil prices have since surged past $105 per barrel, adding to market instability. The whale's $80 million leveraged bet spans cryptocurrency, stocks, and oil—all highly volatile assets. With Bitcoin's liquidation price set at $80,083 and oil's above $93, even small market shifts could force a reckoning. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions continue to drive uncertainty in energy markets and beyond.
