Navi Mumbai's Rs1.87-crore plan to modernise crematoriums and curb pollution

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has launched a new initiative to modernise crematoriums and cut air pollution. Under the Crematorium Vision project, two major facilities in Ghansoli and Turbhe will receive upgrades. The total cost of the improvements is estimated at Rs1.87 crore, including GST. The civic body is transforming the Kaul Aali crematorium in Ghansoli and the central crematorium in Turbhe into hybrid facilities. These will combine LPG and modern wood-based technology to reduce smoke emissions from traditional cremations. A similar smoke-control chimney will also be installed at the crematorium in Pawane village.

The project includes infrastructure upgrades and the installation of pollution-control systems. Regular maintenance and repairs of existing facilities will form part of the ongoing work. The entire modernisation effort is expected to take 12 months to complete.

A proposal for establishing more hybrid crematoriums within municipal limits has already been submitted to the Standing Committee for approval. Once finished, the upgraded crematoriums will operate with lower emissions and improved efficiency. The initiative aims to address air quality concerns while maintaining traditional cremation practices. The total investment of Rs1.87 crore covers all planned upgrades and system installations.
