Directly: The Lake Constance gets a new train connection - New Cross-Border Express Train Links Germany and Austria Without Transfers
A new cross-border train service is set to launch in December, linking Germany and Austria without transfers. The REX 1 Regional Express will connect Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Bregenz, and Schruns every two hours. This marks the first local rail route between Baden-Württemberg and Austria, offering passengers a direct and frequent option for travel between the two countries.
The REX 1 line will run at two-hour intervals, starting from Schruns and Bregenz before continuing through Lindau-Reutin to Friedrichshafen Stadt. Passengers will no longer need to change trains, making journeys smoother and faster.
Each train is around 100 metres long, providing over 290 seats with extra legroom. Features include wheelchair-accessible spaces, free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and USB charging ports. Cyclists will also benefit from a dedicated bike compartment that can hold up to 39 bicycles.
The new service follows a joint effort by Baden-Württemberg and Vorarlberg to improve cross-border transport. Its launch comes after similar success in Austria, where a transfer-free regional express between St. Pölten and Vienna saw passenger numbers rise by over 20% in 2024. The aim is to create a reliable, continuous rail link between Friedrichshafen and Vorarlberg.
The REX 1 Regional Express will begin operations in December, offering a direct and comfortable connection between Germany and Austria. With modern amenities, frequent departures, and no transfers, the service is expected to boost cross-border travel and accessibility.
