New Kaltenkirchen substation paves way for faster S5 S-Bahn services by 2028

Work has started on a new substation in Kaltenkirchen, marking a key step for the future S5 S-Bahn line. The facility will supply electricity for the planned continuous rail service to the town. AKN Eisenbahn is leading the project as part of wider efforts to improve regional transport links. The substation will convert power from the public grid into the railway electricity needed for the S-Bahn’s electric trains. This technical upgrade is essential for the S5 line, which aims to provide faster, more frequent services with fewer transfers. Once operational, the route will strengthen connections between Kaltenkirchen and surrounding areas.

Construction is set to finish by mid-2028. After that, testing and commissioning will take place before the S5 enters regular service in December 2028. The line forms part of a broader push to boost sustainable travel options in the region.

The substation’s completion will enable the S5 to run as planned by late 2028. Improved train frequencies and reduced journey times are expected once the line opens. The project aligns with ongoing efforts to expand and modernise public transport infrastructure.
