New rail lines proposed to boost access for BUGA 2031 visitors
At the heart of the decision is the improvement of rail services around the Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA). Plans include additional stops as well as extra services on existing lines. Discussions are also underway to establish a new Regional Express connection between Bochum, Hagen, Wuppertal, and Cologne. The new line would include a stop at Solingen Central Station and could eventually enable a half-hourly service toward Cologne, significantly boosting accessibility.
Sustainable Mobility Takes Center Stage
A key priority of the proposal is the shift toward climate-friendly mobility. Local public transport is set to be expanded to minimize private car use and reduce the need for parking spaces. In this context, the S7 commuter rail line is also seen as a vital component of a sustainable transport strategy.
BUGA as an Opportunity for the Region
The Green Party representatives on the VRR transport association for Solingen and Wuppertal, Leon Kröck and Timo Schmidt, view the decision as a major success: "This is a significant achievement in our political work within the VRR," they state. The Federal Horticultural Show is a major event that will draw many visitors to the region, offering an opportunity to raise the profile of the Bergisches Städtedreieck (the tri-city area of Wuppertal, Solingen, and Remscheid).
The region is already a tourist destination today, boasting diverse cultural attractions, scenic landscapes, and strong intercity connections. However, efficient infrastructure is crucial to ensuring visitors can easily access these offerings.
Collaboration with State Authorities Planned
To optimally prepare the region for BUGA 2031, the VRR now aims to step up dialogue with the state transport ministry. The goal is to secure funding and implement the necessary measures in a timely manner.
With this unanimous resolution, the transport committee sends a clear signal for better, more interconnected, and climate-friendly mobility in the Bergisches Städtedreieck.
