New York's Penn Station to Get £8 Billion Makeover by 2033
New designs for an £8 billion overhaul of New York’s Penn Station were revealed on Monday. The project aims to transform the busy train hub, used by 650,000 commuters each day. Officials confirmed that passengers will not face fare increases to cover the costs. The renovation will dramatically expand the station’s commuter space. Current facilities span 65,000 square feet, but the new design will stretch to 170,000 square feet. Cramped underground concourses will be replaced with bright, open areas filled with natural light.
Construction is set to begin in 2027 and should take around six years. A key feature will be a grand new entrance on Eighth Avenue. The plan also involves removing the Madison Square Garden theater to make room for improvements.
President Trump previously suggested naming the station after himself. However, organisers have not considered this idea. The name Pennsylvania Station will remain above the entrances as it does now. The project will reshape one of the busiest transport hubs in the US. With no fare hikes planned, the £8 billion cost will be covered without burdening commuters. Once completed, the station will offer far more space and a modern design for daily travellers.
