Nigeria allocates N13.3bn to upgrade Kano-Maiduguri Road in 2026 budget
The Nigerian government has allocated N13.3 billion for the ongoing dualisation of the Kano-Maiduguri Road, Section I, in the 2026 budget. This funding forms part of a broader N3.49 trillion investment in highway projects across the country. The road upgrade aims to boost trade, cut travel times, and improve transport links in northern Nigeria.
The Kano-Maiduguri Road, Section I, covers a 105-kilometre stretch from Kano to Wudil and Shuarin. Once completed, it will enhance connectivity between Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno states. The project also benefits Katsina and Kaduna, as the highway passes through these regions on its route to Maiduguri.
The 2026 budget ensures funding for Section V of the road, which runs from Damaturu to Maiduguri in Borno State. Last year's budget had already set aside N10 billion for this segment. With these allocations, the government expects to finish key parts of the dual-carriageway by 2026.
Road transport remains Nigeria's primary means of moving goods and people. The Kano-Maiduguri upgrade is one of the top ten funded projects in the 2026 budget, reflecting its economic importance. The total national budget for the year stands at N58.18 trillion, with N6.08 trillion dedicated to infrastructure and development.
The completed dual-carriageway will shorten travel times and support regional trade. It will also strengthen the North-East transport corridor, linking major economic hubs. The project aligns with wider efforts to improve Nigeria's road network and boost commerce.
